Currently, there are 3 different Covid-19 tests available to the public: Antigen, RT-PCR and Antibody testing. When to test, test accuracy, and how long the test takes depends on which test is administered. Our clinic offers the Antigen and PCR test for $149 and $120 for the Antibody Test.
The Rapid Antigen Test is the most common, and yields the fastest results. This test looks for the surface proteins unique to the Covid-19 virus, and as a result is not an accurate test until days 4-5 of symptoms. If there are not enough surface proteins, the test will not pick it up, resulting in a high chance of a false negative if performed too soon, or with an inadequate sample. These take 15-20 minutes in office, and are collected using a nasopharyngeal swab.
The RT-PCR Test is much more specific, and looks for the RNA created as a byproduct of the Covid-19 reproductive cycle. Traditionally it has been collected as a saliva sample and would take about 24-48 hours to run. Fortunately, new testing procedures and equipment have allowed us to be able to run them in the office using a nasopharyngeal swab in 30-45 minutes. This test is most accurate in patients who have had symptoms for 3-7 days, though it can be used to detect the virus much earlier than the antigen test, and is significantly more sensitive.
We can still run the saliva tests for patient’s who are opposed to a nasopharyngeal swab, however that requires us to send it to the Soft Cell Laboratory, and has a 24-48 hour turn around time.
Our third test is the Covid-19 Antibody Test. This test is not used to diagnose an acute Covid-19 diagnosis, however it can be run to see if you have had a prior infection and, if so, if you still have antibodies from it. Covid-19 antibodies and whether or not you have or retain them vary from person to person. This test is done through blood work and costs $120 in our clinic. Results typically take 3-4 days.
Unfortunately, we are currently NOT Hawaii Certified, however we are working with them to try and obtain that certification to make travel testing more convenient.
We currently do not carry the Covid-19 vaccine. However, you can find it at Crimson Cliffs Pharmacy or any Walgreens, Smith’s, Albertsons, or Lin’s grocery store.
